Gastric sleeve care for Fontana, CA residents
Fontana sits directly east of Rancho Cucamonga, so a gastric sleeve consultation with Dr. David G. Davtyan, MD, FACS, FICS, FASMBS, is close by, at the Red Oak Street office of Davtyan Medical Weight Loss & Wellness. This page covers the roads, coverage, and three health habits worth raising before surgery.
Three ways west
The office is at 8330 Red Oak Street, Suite 201, Rancho Cucamonga, on a street that meets Arrow Route. Which road suits you depends on where in Fontana you start. OpenStreetMap road data shows these routes; confirm yours in a map app.
- Central Fontana: Arrow Boulevard runs west out of downtown and becomes Arrow Route, which reaches Red Oak Street.
- North Fontana: the I-15 south to Foothill Boulevard, west on Foothill, then south on Spruce Avenue to Red Oak Street.
- South Fontana: the I-10 west to Milliken Avenue, north to Arrow Route, then west to Red Oak Street.
On the day of surgery you go to a hospital instead, one where Dr. Davtyan has surgical privileges. Ask the office which hospital and when to arrive.
Fontana in the data
By the California Department of Finance's estimate, Fontana had 219,774 residents on January 1, 2026, compared with 176,418 in Rancho Cucamonga.
CDC PLACES, the federal source of modeled city health estimates, gives these crude figures for adults:
| Adults | Fontana | Rancho Cucamonga |
|---|---|---|
| Obesity (2023) | 33.2% | 30.0% |
| Sleeping less than 7 hours (2022) | 38.4% | 36.2% |
| Current cigarette smoking (2023) | 11.4% | 10.1% |
| Binge drinking (2023) | 16.1% | 15.8% |
| No health insurance, ages 18 to 64 (2023) | 16.3% | 8.8% |
Most of these are close to the neighboring city's, and none of them describes you. The clearest gap is insurance. The sleep, tobacco and alcohol lines are useful mainly as a reminder of three conversations to have early.
Sleep, tobacco and alcohol: three things to raise early
Sleep
Short or unrefreshing sleep, loud snoring and daytime tiredness can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea, in which breathing repeatedly pauses during sleep. The 2021 Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society guideline calls it common among people with severe obesity and links it to heart and lung complications around surgery. It says a questionnaire may help identify people at high risk, and that people on home CPAP (a breathing machine used at night) should use it right after surgery. See tests before sleeve surgery.
Tobacco
Federal health guidance from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) mentions quitting at least 6 weeks ahead of surgery, while the ERAS floor is 4 weeks. Smoking has been tied to infections and lung problems after these operations. If you smoke, say so at the first visit and ask for help quitting.
Alcohol
The ERAS guideline says all patients should be screened for alcohol and tobacco use before surgery, and it warns about a risk of relapse afterward. Our page on alcohol after a gastric sleeve explains what changes.
Coverage for Fontana residents
Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga are both in San Bernardino County, so crossing the city line does not change your Medi-Cal county. For 2026 the state Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) table names Molina Healthcare of California, Inland Empire Health Plan and Kaiser Permanente for the county, plus SCAN Connections, which covers people who have both Medicare and Medi-Cal. These are the county's plans. Each has its own network and approval process for surgery.
The practice works with PPO and HMO plans that allow care with Dr. Davtyan. Ask us whether we can see patients on your plan. Plans also differ on the BMI they require: the 2022 ASMBS and IFSO guidelines recommend surgery at a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, but an insurer may apply older criteria. Read insurance requirements for a sleeve and what affects the cost of a sleeve.
If you already have a sleeve
If you already have a sleeve, including one done somewhere else, the common questions are heartburn, weight coming back, or having missed follow-up labs. Each has its own page: acid reflux after a sleeve, weight regain, and sleeve revision. A sleeve cannot be undone. What can be done about a problem depends on the case, so call and ask whether Dr. Davtyan can see you for it.
For an urgent problem, do not make the trip west. Being unable to keep fluids down, vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest or belly pain, fever with a rapid pulse or breathlessness soon after surgery, or a swollen, painful calf all call for the closest emergency room or 911.
Frequently asked questions
I snore and wake up tired. Does that affect sleeve surgery?
It can, so mention it. Those can be signs of sleep apnea, which affects breathing around anesthesia. It does not by itself rule out surgery, but your team needs to know before the operation. Ask which sleep testing, if any, you need and where to have it done. If you already use CPAP, say so at the first visit.
My sleeve was done in Mexico. Can I get follow-up near Fontana?
Practices differ on this, so call the office, explain where and when the surgery was done, and ask whether Dr. Davtyan can see you. Gather the operative report if you can get it, plus any lab or imaging results since. Our pages on transfer patients and surgery in Mexico versus local care have more.
Is Spanish spoken at the office?
Yes. Spanish is spoken at the office (hablamos español). If that matters for your visit, ask about it when you call. An operation that cannot be reversed deserves a conversation you fully understand, so write down your questions ahead of time and ask for anything unclear to be explained again.
What if I am between insurance plans right now?
You can still call. The first consultation is complimentary, and you can use it to learn whether a sleeve is worth pursuing before coverage is settled. If you expect new insurance soon, have the plan name ready. If you might pay yourself, ask for the costs in writing and ask the office whether financing is available.
